Thailand Faces Severe Dengue Fever Outbreak as Cases Surge
Nearly 500% Increase in Cases Reported
Dengue Cases Jump from 46,678 in 2022 to 136,655 in 2023
Thailand is currently facing a severe outbreak of dengue fever, with cases surging by nearly 500% in the past year. According to the Thailand Bureau of Epidemiology, there were 136,655 reported cases of dengue in 2023, compared to just 46,678 in 2022.
The increase in cases has been attributed to the rainy season and the El NiƱo weather phenomenon, which have created ideal conditions for the Aedes mosquito, the vector that transmits the dengue virus.
Dr. Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn, Director-General of the Department of Disease Control (DCD), said that as many as 8,197 people have been hospitalized with dengue fever so far this year, and 12 people have died.
The DCD is urging people to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, including wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and clearing standing water around their homes.
