Ecuador Revokes Citizenship of Julian Assange
Former Wikileaks Founder Now Imprisoned in the UK
Ecuadorian Court Rules in Favor of Revoking Assange's Citizenship
Ecuador has officially revoked the citizenship of Julian Assange, founder of the whistleblowing organization WikiLeaks. The decision was handed down by an Ecuadorian court on Monday, according to a recent judgment.
Assange, an Australian national, was granted Ecuadorian citizenship in 2017 while seeking asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. He had fled to the embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he was facing sexual assault allegations. In 2019, Assange was arrested at the embassy and removed from asylum, after which he was extradited to the UK.
The Ecuadorian government has not officially stated the reasons for revoking Assange's citizenship. However, it has been suggested that the decision may be related to Assange's ongoing legal battles and the Ecuadorian government's desire to improve relations with the UK and the US.
Assange is currently serving a 50-week prison sentence in the UK for skipping bail and is also fighting extradition to the US, where he faces charges of violating the Espionage Act.
