Despite facing overwhelming odds, she refused to surrender, famously declaring, "I will die as a queen or triumph as a sovereign!"

Exile and eventual Restoration

In 1799, French forces overran Naples, forcing Maria Carolina and her family to flee into exile. For several years, they found refuge in Palermo, Sicily, under the protection of the British Royal Navy. In 1815, following Napoleon's defeat, Maria Carolina triumphantly returned to Naples, where she continued to reign until her death in 1814.
